A passion for creating sustainable culture and education.

The two partners Association Ad astra from Poland and No Encalco de ldeias – Associacao form Portugal just started a new project.

The ideas- what for?

The mainstream of the project activities will be the greening of cultural education of adult learners (thus the project title- “Green arts “) educating and promoting environmental practices, encouraging the staff volunteers, stakeholders, audiences in the two partner countries to act sustainably and promote initiatives to raise awareness.

The audience and target groups – for whom?

The target group of the project is first of all, the audiences of the performances, the local citizens – common attendees/receivers of the artistic works produced by the partners, the trainees of the regular activities. They will not only be able to see the performances, but become actively engaged into it, express their emotions, augment the unfolding story.

Basing on the experience of the Portuguese team who have already led such projects, the project ambition is to become truły community art project where at each stage, the citizens will be involved, including the creative process, but also in the sustainable materiał, props for the performances, involving the community such as the “wool ladies” (little informal group of ladies producing wool in Portuguese village, who actively participated in the theatre project before), local folklore music and dance groups. lt is the role of each partner to provide audience members with a platform for participation in the performances as the audience active participation and respond is vital for the project. The partners staff members, artists, volunteers and all the stakeholders will all benefit from the project implementation because of the “green policy frameworks”, one of the steps towards sustainable development.

Why them – how the project will address the needs?

The need for that project appeared some time ago, during the partners’ previous cooperation – we realised that not only we have a lot in common because of the same working fields, equity, inclusion and diversity principles but also because we are all similarly concerned about the environmental problems, feel the need to improve our lifestyles and share good,,green”practices with our audiences. Those needs were expressed not only by the staff members, but also the participants. To confirm that need for a change, the partners interviewed their adult learners, other participants and stakeholders as for the necessity of changing the attitude towards sustainability and practical solutions to be applied in their organisations. The feedback was 100 % positive in case of the respondents between 30 and 55 years old (about 20-30 persons interviewed per partner). The younger learners also expressed the need for changes but for them it seems to be mostly theory or the concern for big governmental institutions- they mostly thought globally, not locally (the well-worth attention is the fact, that the results did not differ much in the partner institutions, despite the different cultures and backgrounds and young generations exhibit less civic engagement on many issues, including the environment). So far the partner institutions already had some generał „green rules” regarding the recycling or avoiding single use plastic items – from the observations we learned that the participants over 50 were ahead of every such activity, and the young people were the worst offenders.

What activities?

40 workshops and 4 performances during the two years of the project. The results? We hope they will last forever and the green practices will stay with us.
